Geological Site of Special Scientific Interest
Within the 12 acre site there is an old quarry exposing a large section of limestone some 440 million years old.
This has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) as the exposure provides the standard reference section of the Cautleyan-Rawtheyan (Ashgill) Shoalshook Limestone.
The trilobite fauna includes a number of species for which this is the type-locality, and also a rich echinoderm-bearing horizon. Corals, brachiopods and rare graptolites are also present.
The Shoalshook Limestone is of the highest value in British and International correlation in the Upper Ordovician.
